Fish, blood and bone is a very safe fertiliser, especially when dug into the soil but as with all products, the user should follow the safety directions on the label. Westland Fish Blood and Bone all purpose plant food provides fast but long-lasting vigorous growth and lush foliage, strengthens the roots of the plant, builds the fertility of the soil, and boosts flowering. In spring and summer sprinkle granules evenly on to the soil around plants at a rate of 70 g/m2(2oz/yd2), avoiding contact with the plant itself 3.

Each soil has also a saturation level of nutrients it can absorb: when there is too much fertilizer in the ground the plants will not use it and the precious fertilizer will run off or leach. Alternatively sprinkle the granules over the soil surface, around the stem of the plant and water in well. This fish blood, and bone fertiliser is meant to be used every 4 to 6 weeks throughout the growing season (February to October). You must ensure the end user of these products complies with the DEFRA/HSE Code for the Safe use of Pesticides. My pet hate is liquid fertilisers that are so strong, they burn the foliage or, worse, get washed away as soon as it rains.
