About this deal

My UK-bought 3-month old E-M10 Mark IIIs showed me that, although it is basically still a Mark III, it does have some worthwhile improvements over the Mark III itself (slightly more than DPR's announcement stated when they said there was absolutely nothing else, inside or out, over what they had mentioned). The E-M10 Mark IV is Olympus’ answer to cameras like the Panasonic Lumix G100, Fujifilm X-T200 and Sony ZV-1. And it manages to stand out with its classic OM-D styling, super-compact body and that excellent IBIS system. The 20MP resolution isn’t going to grab any headlines, but it's a significant and welcome step up over its predecessor's 16MP sensor, and keeps it within range of the competition.

Aside from these features, there aren’t other big spec or physical changes of note from the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III. It’s a sensible update, one that focuses on improving the camera’s stills capabilities. Which perhaps means that the E-PL series isn't done yet. The line saw annual (if incremental) updates every year from 2016 to 2019, culminating in the Olympus PEN E-PL10. These were consistently among the best-selling cameras in Japan and Asia, but that gangbusters business wasn't really replicated in the West. While it's a great first camera for beginners, we'd also recommend the E-M10 Mark IV to more experienced photographers on a budget or those looking to downsize from a DSLR. It doesn’t deliver the battery or image quality performance of high-end mirrorless cameras or DSLRs, but it could be a great option as a recce or second camera. For those situations, and at this price, it's a terrific beginner mirrorless camera and certainly one of the best cameras for photography around. Price and release date Either way, OM Digital said that the PEN line is alive. And in fact, the E-P7 was the first camera released under the new ownership. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see an OM System E-P8 or an OM System E-PL11 –or even to see them receive new names. The OM System verdictThe Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV weighs just 383g without a lens. (Image credit: Future) Specifications In manual + auto-ISO I can see that there's a still subject in one shot, and a moving one in another, and simply adjust my shutter speed to get the results I want. In aperture priority I don't have that control and end up with a higher ISO than I needed for the stationary subject, and a blurred shot of the moving subject. Finally, the E-M10 Mark III's Art Filter (ART) collection grows to 15 with the arrival of a new Bleach Bypass effect.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV Micro Four Thirds System Camera

The E-M10 used the BLS-1 battery first supplied with the earlier E-P1/2 compact mirrorless cameras rather than the BLN-1 used by the OM-D E-M5 and E-M1 models. The OMD EM10 Mark III is a subtle upgrade to the Mark II, sharing a great deal with its predecessor, including the same 16 Megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor, the same five axis sensor-shift stabilisation (good for four stops of compensation), the same 2360k dot / 0.62x magnification electronic viewfinder, the same Wifi capabilities, and the same 3in / 3:2 shaped / 1040k dot tilting screen. New to the Mark III is the TruePic VIII processor that equips it with 4k video recording (at 24, 25 or 30p) which also benefits from the sensor-shift stabilisation. The contrast-based AF system has also been upgraded from 81 to 121 points, and continuous shooting improved fractionally from 8.5 to 8.6fps. The body is also slightly larger and a tad heavier, but it remains a very compact camera you’d be happy to carry anywhere. Moving on, the EM10 Mark II inherits the interval timer of its predecessor, offering up to 999 frames at intervals from one second to a second shy of 25 hours, and with an initial delay again up to a second short of 25 hours. You can choose whether to record just the images, or have the camera additionally create a movie from them afterwards at 720p, 1080p or in 4k. Note you’ll need to set the photo aspect ratio to 16:9 if you’d like the camera to subsequently encode a widescreen video. The Micro Four Thirds mount gives the OMD EM10 Mark III access to the broadest and most established native lens catalogue of all the mirrorless camera systems. Micro Four Thirds has over 75 lenses available from Panasonic and Olympus along with third parties including Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Voigtlander and others. So while many rival mirror-less formats are only now beginning to cover most bases with a single lens, Micro Four Thirds typically has two or more options available. Whether it’s Fisheye, ultra wide, fast aperture, macro, super-zoom or good old general-purpose, the Micro Four Thirds catalogue has it covered, and many of them are great quality too – find out more in my best Micro Four Thirds lenses guide.
