About this deal

At the same time a school for the 'magically infused young people' is uncovered. People in charge call it an institution that provides education and protection. People not in charge call it a torture dungeon. This is how nineteen-year-old Alison Arkin finds out that – despite what the recruiters told her – she doesn’t have magical powers. All she has is an (admittedly impressive) eidetic memory and an overwhelming eagerness to please. A bit like the authors droll and at times moribund delivery, this book along with all Yahtzee’s books, grows on you. Not unlike an attractive wart. I disliked his voice when I first heard it but slowly came round. It shouldn’t work but despite my best efforts the contrary it really does. Adding depth and weight to his characters. A good story is like a good bowel movement: it's only really satisfying once it's ended, because if you just keep going eventually your body runs out of shit and moves on to pushing all your internal organs out your sphincter until only a foul smelling shell remains and anyone who wants to get into your incredibly long poo gets turned off because they have to go through all the poo up until that point to have the necessary context.”

Yahtzee Croshaw (of Zero Punctuation fame) has created an intriguing system of magic with his latest book. Most fantasy stories feature a type of magic that sort of just exists, something that can be used by anyone with the right skills or genetics. Here, it’s more complicated. And dangerous. In the simplest terms, there’s a dimension that consists entirely of the Ancients; unknowable beings who’s energy occasionally “leaks” into ours and then bonds with adolescent humans. Most of the time this causes some interesting but fairly useless magical talents, like hair that glows but only in the sunlight. Occasionally it’s something more powerful, like being able to control elements. In everycase it’s a cause for concern, because the energy is technically a piece of the Ancients themselves, and the Ancients have been known to take over their human host and run amok. Characters: The characters in this book I feel are the highlight, more importantly their personal voice. I can’t stop laughing at Millenial Jessica and the book does not just end there. The main protagonist is also fun with her insecurities and very real and relatable feelings of young adults finding a place for themselves. Then there is the zany shoggoths and the top hat and the Merlins and the list goes on and on, the characters are nuts. Half-Life (7 March 2018). "Fully Ramblomatic – the blog of Yahtzee Croshaw: Differently Morphous is the name of a book I wrote".Diablerie continues to be very capable despite being an absolutely ridiculous person, as he seemingly solves the mystery by himself, possibly even before they discovered the solution. Fitting for a man who is sometimes "Nicholas Fisk", someone who used to be the Ministry's fixer. Curb-Stomp Battle: Victor almost delivered one to Jessica-Shgshthx at the climax. Due to having a power that is especially suited for combat, the fight went overwhelmingly in his favour before a moment of last second hesitation cost him his victory and nearly his life. It's Yahtzee Croshaw and a sequel at that. You'll either love him or hate him, I suppose. I'm in the first camp. The DEDA Files" is honestly as good as the Rivers Of London series. Although Existentially Challenged is shorter than Differently Morphous, it somehow feels a bit tighter and yet squeezes even more in. The fact that there's no music this time doesn't matter, not when you've got Yahtzee's dulcet tones in your ears.

Beautiful English humor and an overdose of sarcasm. It's very Yahtzee. If you've read any of his works before you'll know exactly what to expect.

Did Not Think This Through: The Government wanted to deal with the rash of fake magic scammers (faith healers in particular) that were getting out of hand now that everyone knows magic is real. Unfortunately they wrote the law so broadly that they caught up things like party magicians as well.

Planet of Steves: The Fluidics, having originally been one part of the same entity, all possess the same name (Pronounced: Shug-shuh-thx). If you suggest this is confusing the internet hate machine will be all over you for being racist. There is also a lot of religious apology. The Church of England is portrayed as out of touch but well meaning. It is even suggested that they support minorities despite not allowing gay marriages as well as there being well documented racist, homophobic and transphobic institutional bigotry to this very day. This portrayal is the major stand in for all religion. The only other representation of official religion is an American fundamentalist faith healer and even they are portrayed in the most forgiving light. While the American fundamentalist movement is notorious for bigotry this again is not represented in the story. All the characters are memorable, even if not likeable. Hopefully not spoilers, but I found myself feeling sympathy for Victor (Who I never really liked) and am now crushing majorly on Adam (Who was always my favourite). Croshaw, Ben.
