The book’s synopsis reads: “ Call the Midwife: The Official Cookbook includes more than 100 beautiful photographs of featured recipes and stills from the show and dozens of memorable quotes from many of the series characters that viewers have come to know. So many of those great characters have stayed with me," Worth shared on the publication of her first memoir. "Most people in London at that time didn't know the East End - they pushed it aside. There was no law, no lighting, bedbugs and fleas. It was a hidden place, not written about at all." Fans and food historians alike will appreciate not only the detailed references to the place each dish holds in the show’s storyline but also its greater contribution within England’s culinary history.”

Containing previously unpublished material describing her time spent in Paris and some journal entries, this is also a portrait of Jennifer herself, complete with a moving introduction by her family about the woman they knew and loved. While the TV series has been based on Worth's memoirs, depicting the lives of nurses, nuns and women in the community dealing with issues of abortion, miscarriage, poverty and race, there are some differences. In the UK midwives are still primarily responsible for assisting mothers through labour and delivery, attending over two-thirds of births and caring for and managing the wellbeing of mothers and babies. The only vegetables book you'll ever need reveals hundreds of ways to cook nearly every vegetable under the sun.

There are also further recollections penned by Jennifer herself, including an entertaining passage about the time she spent in Paris. Jennifer Worth seems to be a lady of many depths and talents, and I'm sure her husband and family will be thrilled at how many people have been inspired by her writing, and the awareness she raised in profiling midwifery." Who was Jennifer Worth? We celebrate the International Day of the Midwife 2021 (5 May) at Yours, learning more about the profession, its history and giving thanks to the wonderful midwives who have played a huge role in home-birthing. She worked with the Sisters of St John the Divine, an Anglican community of nuns, and focused her efforts on aiding the poor before becoming a ward sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in Bloomsbury. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

This final book in Jennifer Worth's trilogy shares her last memories from her time as a midwife in London's East End and brings her story full circle. More than just a tie-in cookbook, this fine work explains the culinary scene in Britain during the period of 1956-1970. Recipes for food and drink seen on the show are categorized and interspersed with exceptionally interesting essays about the food of the time. The official tour has been overseen by Call the Midwife producers, Neal Street Productions. It features material from the latest series, as well as props, costumes and set, all guided by your personal costumed midwife. There was more great news for Call the Midwife fans last month, when the BBC revealed that the show will continue for another three seasons! The way the chapters are prepared is just real life - you don't know what is around the corner. This read has been hard to leave alone for very long so I will be buying the other two books in the series soon AND putting the boxed set of Call the Midwife on my 'Santa' list! I would have given more stars if it had been possible. I've not watched a lot of the TV series but the book is much better as it is 'real' with the most brilliant narrative. According to the World Health Organisation, nurses and midwives account for nearly 50 per cent of the global health force so if you know someone who practices as a midwife or if you yourself were supported during childbirth, make sure to share a heartfelt thank you for all the work they do. More articles to read about Call the Midwife The renewal will take the show up until 2026 with its fifteenth season, and creator Heidi Thomas is “thrilled” by the announcement.Sister Julienne and fellow midwife Cynthia, close friends of Worth, retained their names in the TV series whilst other characters, though based on real people, had their names changed, such as the enormously popular Chummy played by Miranda Hart. Whether you’re an amateur or an expert home cook, this cookbook will serve up authentic dishes for all skill levels.”

Since its recognition as a practice in Britain at the start of the 20th Century, midwives have made a critical impact to the health, wellbeing and safety of mums and newborn babies. Whilst the TV drama is a British favourite and now in its tenth series, we recommend reading the emotional and riveting true stories and memoirs that inspired the hit TV series, written by author and former nurse and midwife Jennifer Worth. There's Jane, who cleaned and generally helped out at Nonnatus House - she was taken to the workhouse as a baby and was allegedly the illegitimate daughter of an aristocrat. Peggy and Frank's parents both died within six months of each other and the children were left destitute. At the time, there was no other option for them but the workhouse. One viewer had a great idea for the next book, suggesting a Call the Midwife knitting patterns book. This year, the International Confederation of Midwives have chosen to celebrate the theme of “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives” for International Day of the Midwife 2021. Coming together as a global midwife community the ICM wants to reflect on the progress made in the profession over the years and advocate for investment in quality midwifery care around the world that'll improve child, reproductive and maternal health. And Sister Monica Joan, the eccentric ninety-year-old nun, is accused of shoplifting some small items from the local market. She is let off with a warning, but then Jennifer finds stolen jewels from Hatton Garden in the nun's room. These stories give a fascinating insight into the resilience and spirit that enabled ordinary people to overcome their difficulties. The book is set in Poplar, in the East End of London, where Jenny Lee, Worth's maiden name, works as a midwife and district nurse, attached to a convent, Nonnatus House (a pseudonym for the Community of St. John the Divine, where Worth actually worked). The Reverend Thornton-Appleby-Thorton, a missionary in Africa, visits the Nonnatus nuns and Sister Julienne acts as matchmaker. The BBC’s hit period drama about a group of nurse midwives in the East End of London during the 1960s recently concluded its twelfth season in the UK.
