There are different flavors and colors of Hale's blue boy syrups. Those flavors include Mali (Jasmine), Creme soda, pineapple, rose, grape, strawberry, cantaloupe, and sarsaparilla. They all have different colors matching the taste of the fruits used. I haven't had most of them, as Nom Yen is the most popular. Enjoy! Remove from the fridge when ready to eat. Top with sliced strawberries or other berries and a dollop of Greek style yogurt if desired. Then enjoy! Crushed Ice: Once the drink has been thoroughly mixed, it's poured over crushed ice for a sweet and refreshing treat. Vanilla Protein Powder. Use either a whey or plant-based vanilla protein powder. I’ve used Rule 1 Vanilla Crème protein powder. It has an impressive 25 grams of protein per 30-gram scoop for just 110 calories and tastes delicious! If using an unflavored protein powder, add ¼ TSP vanilla extract or use 5 drops of vanilla flavo drops.

The usual way to make pink milk is with 1-part sala syrup, 1-part evaporated milk, ½ part condensed milk, these are then mixed with either cow’s milk or hot water. Nom Yen (นมเย็น) or Thai pink milk is a refreshing drink commonly sold, along with Thai iced tea, on the streets of Thailand. In Thai, "nom" means milk, while "yen," in this case, means iced. Literally, nom yen means iced milk but when we're talking about the name of a drink, it specifically means this Thai pink milk. While you can make a version of Thai iced coffee very similar to the method of making Nom Yem with instant coffee, a true Thai iced coffee uses Oliang. Oliang is Thailand’s very own version of coffee, made from a blend of the robusta species of ground coffee beans, brown sugar , seeds and spices such as cardamom , sesame seeds , soy beans , cinnamon , rice , corn and more! This blend creates a coffee with a unique smoky aroma and taste. Making this coffee from scratch is a labour of love, especially when that’s just one step to making Thai iced coffee. Fortunately, Cofe Oliang has a pre-made Thai coffee syrup blend ready to use in an instant! Sato is widely consumed by the locals, particularly during celebrations. The drink is usually served at room temperature in large bowls. And guests are invited to scoop it up themselves, making it a social and communal drink. However, despite its widespread popularity, Sato remains a liqueur that is produced on a small scale, mainly due to its short shelf life. Make a big batch for serving at gatherings Hale’s Blue Boy is at the center of many celebrated Thai drinks. Since 1959, the syrup brand has been producing flavored liquid sugar in traditional Thai flavors like sala (palm fruit) and mali (jasmine) as well as Western-inspired flavors like cream soda. The brand also carries a grape, pineapple, strawberry, root beer, rose, and cantaloupe flavor -- though you’ll be hard pressed to find these among Thais. The three most iconic flavors are most definitely dang, which translates to red and is the sala flavor; kieow, meaning green and referring to the cream soda flavor, and mali, or jasmine. In Washington DC, a mother-daughter duo that run Thai Chef Street Food, have a fancier interpretation of nom yen on their menu. It’s called the “Unicorn Nom Yen” and has the traditional Hale’s sala base mixed with milk, but boasts a crown of whipped cream and colorful sprinkles on top. “It was definitely my favorite drink as a kid and that’s why I serve Unicorn Nom Yen at our restaurant,” explained Chalisa Fitts, one half of Thai Chef Street Food, who inherited her mom’s love of Hale’s Blue Boy. Milk of choice. Use Whole milk or fresh milk. I used oat milk, and it was excellent. Almond, hemp, cashew, cow's, and soy milk all work great. I find that coconut milk clashes too much with the flavors of Sala syrup, and it takes over the drink. I don't recommend it if wanting authentic flavors to come through. Use ground chia seeds and flax seeds. The nutrients are better absorbed by your body when these seeds are ground. However, whole seeds are totally fine and are still an excellent source of nutrition.
