About this deal

The microphone has Bluetooth technology that allows the wireless connection of a smartphone using the Joby Wavo PRO app. Once connected, the operator can adjust setting including graphic equalization, automatic power function, and active noise reduction.

A low cut filter switch has a pre set frequency of 100Hz. When employed, this can alleviate unwanted rumble and low frequency thump noises. Another advantage of using an on-camera microphone is that it frees up your hands, allowing you to move around and gesture while you're speaking. This can make your videos more dynamic and engaging for your audience. A bigger issue is that the knob is not notched, so it’s difficult to know how large the adjustments you’re making are. A small microphone icon on the knob helps alleviate this a touch, although that’s mostly there to indicate that pushing the knob in mutes the microphone, and it’s difficult to tell if where it’s pointing relates to volume given that you can spin the knob a full 360 degrees. The premium product is the Wavo Pro shotgun mic that looks as though it’s designed to compete with the popular Rode VideoMic Pro series. The shotgun is mounted in a Rycote Lyre (both Joby and Rycote are part of the Vitec/Manfrotto group) and comes with an active noise reduction system that cancels out ‘self-generated structural noise’ coming from the camera movements, a change of grip on the camera and wind noise. The microphone also has a safety channel feature that can set the left channel to 10dBs below the main level. This means that should something louder than expected happen the safety channel will be able to record it while the main channel peaks out. An active noise reduction (ANR) system that leverages enhanced onboard Rycote technology to process and clear sounds made from on-the-go creation, removing self- generated structural noise. The mid-range Wavo PRO DS is the perfect companion for creators looking for a solid upgrade. The shotgun microphone shares most of the pro-grade components of the flagship Wavo PRO, but is designed to deliver high-quality audio with a more streamlined user experience. Wavo PRO DS features include: Standing around 9.5-inches high, the Wavo Pod reaches a comfortable height to be level with my mouth on the supplied stand sat on my desktop, but this will obviously be dependent on the height of the table or desk it’s placed on. For the best movability you may prefer to fit it to a desk arm. Despite its rather chunky dimensions and weight at 1.58 pounds, it works fine on my setup but this may be something to consider for your own setup.

The built in ANR (Active Noise Reduction) algorithm removes self-generated structural noise in real time, making sure you get the cleanest audio possible directly into your camera while shooting on the go. When I push the Blue Yeti’s mute button, it doesn’t show up on the recording at all, but that’s not the case with the Wavo Pod. Instead, pushing in the Wavo Pod’s combination volume knob/mute toggle creates a noticeable “thump” in your recording, similar to when you unplug a guitar from an amp. While not a problem for the occasional one-off muting, this is a huge red flag for anyone who likes to constantly use their hardware mute button in podcasts and other professional settings, like I do. The best creators know that great video needs great audio, and so does JOBY. That’s why JOBY’s adding all-new pro audio gear like shotgun, lav and wireless mics to its already great ecosystem of premium video, lighting and stability gear. Sadly, the metal pop filter that supplied really doesn't add any value. This mesh-like grille clips onto the front of the mic, and during my tests I really couldn't hear any difference to the sound performance of the mic. I regularly use a pop filter for voiceover recordings, but the Joby accessory didn't prevent pops or sibilant sounds from coming through and making it onto the recording. Joby Wavo Pod review: Verdict The Joby Wavo Pod is a solid budget microphone, easily competing toe-to-toe with the current budget king, the Blue Yeti. Its compatibility with Joby’s ecosystem of accessories should make it an easy choice for any amateur content creators who’ve already got a few Joby tripods hanging around, or even anyone who doesn’t want to bother with a boom arm adapter, as the Wavo Pod comes with one out of the box. And yet, it doesn’t quite live up to all of its promises, especially with its noticeable but largely useless included pop filter. On-camera microphones can be either directional or omnidirectional. Directional microphones are designed to capture sound from a specific direction, making them ideal for vlogging or recording in noisy environments. Omnidirectional microphones, on the other hand, capture sound from all directions, making them ideal for capturing ambient sounds. Portability: If you need to carry your microphone around, look for a lightweight and compact option that's easy to transport.

Built for storytellers, filmmakers and expert content creators, Wavo PRO is designed to pair with the latest camera hardware and brings broadcast-level audio performance to this dynamic and growing audience. The Blue Yeti is one of the more common hobbyist microphones, despite being somewhat old and disliked by professionals, and makes for a good benchmark for a microphone in the Wavo Pod’s price range. Its standalone design offers higher quality and control than you’ll find in a headset microphone and especially webcam microphones, and it’s able to capture a wider range of vocals than you might be used to if you’ve never used a USB microphone before. You’ll get less echo when speaking from a distance, more sultry tones when speaking up close, better recreation of instruments and of course your own voice and could possibly even include multiple speakers more easily. That the Wavo Pod can match its audio quality is a good sign. Two ¼-20 mounts on either side of the mic stand can attach accessories, and position the mic using a GorillaPod or boom arm for any streamer’s customized setup. A simple dedicated digital sound management app for iOS and Android, that connects via Bluetooth to Wavo PRO to provide creators real- time and remote visual monitoring of sound Overall, using an on-camera microphone is a simple but effective way to improve the quality of your video content.
