About this deal

This is a common cause of washing machine electrical problems. The heating element is submerged in water and can earth out if it’s damaged. It could also be the wiring which connects to the element which can be faulty.

As well as looking unpleasant, if it builds up it can prevent detergent from being washed into the machine and water entering the drum. The heater simply cycles on and off as required and it is powered on and off by the control board as it detects is needed by way of the sensor. But if you're struggling to fit the machine under your worktop, you could try lowering the machine's adjustable feet to gain an extra few centimetres. The element plays an important role in keeping your appliance running, as it ensures the water is hot during the wash (if the water is not heated the machine may wash continuously and not finish a cycle).

Drainage – The drain pump removes excess water from the drum during each step of the wash cycle. If the drain pump is broken and either can't remove the water or indicate that it's done, then the machine won't continue to run. Strange noises coming from the machine during (supposed) draining is a sure sign there's a problem. A common misconception is that the heating element in your washing machine will ramp up and down in a variable type fashion but they do not at all, ever, they are simply on or off. They either have continuity on test or they do not, the resistance value for failures is largely irrelevant in virtually all instances. If I do the same test on the fan oven element again connecting one probe to the metalwork and the other to the electrical connector and pressed test once more you can see a reading of 7.6 Meg ohms.Other causes include a faulty drive motor or pump. If you're still not sure on the cause call in a professional to inspect your machine. Washing machine isn't heating the water We see this problem crop up fairly regularly on the forums and sometimes there is a fault but, often times there’s not. Overloading – if you try to squeeze too many items in one wash, you could be left with no clean clothes at all. Overloading means the clothes can't move around the machine, dirt can get trapped between items of clothing and it leaves little room for the detergent to disperse. If the power to your washing machine won't turn off then your standby button may be faulty. But if the wash cycles won't stop and instead continue after every spin, then it's probably down to the timer or control board. Many modern machines have the likes of a 40˚C cotton wash indicated on the panel but that’s not actually what it is. What it is really is a program that the manufacturer has deemed to be an equivalent program for that HLCC wash code that satisfies the requirement of that wash label.

Now you know that there are only two states you can probably work out that the heating element in your washing machine is really rather a dumb thing broadly speaking. If it trips straight after filling with water and after the drum has been turning; It could be a fault with the heating element.

However what causes that part to trip the RCD, breaker or fuse is another matter. The most common reason is when the machine has an earth leakage or dead short. This would usually happen every time you turn the machine on. With modern machines and low temperature washes, which is what most people do, you will generally speaking not feel much if any heat through the door glass. And, when you do it’s only on the wash part of the cycle. On older machines the washer would just stop and sit there forever with water in it looking rather forlorn.
