About this deal

Action Zone, we are marking the anniversary of the publication of The Tailor of Gloucester by celebrating its origins on Westgate Street.' Potter described The Tailor of Gloucester as her favourite book, and it is said that she was inspired by a curious story told by her Gloucestershire cousin who lived in nearby Harescombe. The stitches of those buttonholes were so neat—SO neat—I wonder how they could be stitched by an old man in spectacles, with crooked old fingers, and a tailor’s thimble. Now what can that be?” said the Tailor of Gloucester, jumping up from his chair. The tailor crossed the kitchen, and stood quite still beside the dresser, listening, and peering through his spectacles. Whilst I still consider Beatrix to be primarily an illustrator, her story telling prowess is quite evident here. The tale flows and the characters are brought to life not only by her wonderful drawings but also through their actions. It is such a charming little tale of humans and animals working in harmony together, though I didn't feel any of the tweeness I felt when reading the previous two. Perhaps because a human is main stage-and we see the world through their eyes rather than through the animals-that it becomes a little more real, as opposed to being personified animals in woods wearing clothing.

But the tailor came out of his shop and shuffled home through the snow. And although it was not a big house, the tailor was so poor he only rented the kitchen. This is passing extraordinary!” said the Tailor of Gloucester, and turned over another tea-cup, which was upside down. The tailor worked and worked, and he talked to himself. He measured the silk, and turned it round and round, and trimmed it into shape with his shears; the table was all littered with cherry-coloured snippets. This experience sparked Potter’s lifelong interest in the natural world and formed the basis for her love of animals and the countryside that shone through her novels. All day long while the light lasted he sewed and snippetted, piecing out his satin, and pompadour, and lutestring; stuffs had strange names, and were very expensive in the days of the Tailor of Gloucester.

BEATRIX POTTER

Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. But Simpkin set down the pipkin of milk upon the dresser, and looked suspiciously at the tea-cups. He wanted his supper of little fat mouse! For behind the wooden wainscots of all the old houses in Gloucester, there are little mouse staircases and secret trap doors; and the mice run from house to house through those long, narrow passages. The tailor came out of his shop at dark. No one lived there at nights but little brown mice, and THEY ran in and out without any keys!

first of a series of improvements to the public areas of Westgate Street, which will also include new seating and planting schemes in the near future. Other popular coins minted in 2018 include the Flopsy Bunny 50p (1.4 million mintage), the second Peter Rabbit 50p (1.4 million mintage) and the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p (1.7 million mintage), making the Tailor of Gloucester coin the most common by a considerable margin. This is passing extraordinary!" aid the Tailor of Gloucester, and turned over another tea-cup, which was upside down. Everything was finished except just one single cherry-colored buttonhole, and where that buttonhole was wanting there was pinned a scrap of paper with these words—in little teeny weeny writing— When he arrived home Simpkin, the tailor’s cat, was there to greet him. Simpkin, too, was fond of mice - though he preferred them for his supper.Beatrix Potter was born to a wealthy family in London, England in 1866. Supposedly tutored (but largely ignored) by her governess, she had many long hours to spend alone with a growing menagerie of pets, which she taught herself to draw in startlingly accurate detail and proportion. Her innate intelligence and ability to observe and document minute details of nature should have given her a scientific career. But Victorian England didn't even think women should have "their own" money or property, much less a career in a "man's world." This book is so so sooo long that it made me appreciate the conciseness of the others in the series. Nothing was really gained by having so many more words except that it takes longer to read. The whole thing is rendered a bit dull by the length. En la época que los hombres usaban pelucas y ropajes con muchos encajes y volanes, un sastre anciano y pobre tiene que hacer un abrigo y un chaleco para el alcalde el día de navidad en que se va a casar. At last!’ he cried. ‘But it’s the day of the Mayor’s wedding - and I have no time to complete his clothes!’ From the tailor’s ship in Westgate came a glow of light; and when Simpkin crept up to peep in at the window it was full of candles. There was a snippeting of scissors, and snappeting of thread; and little mouse voices sang loudly and gaily:

The boards were swept and clean; the little ends of thread and the little silk snippets were all tidied away, and gone from off the floor. Then Simpkin went on tip-toe and took a little parcel of silk out of the tea-pot; and looked at it in the moonlight; and he felt quite ashamed of his badness compared with those good little mice! In 1890, she began illustrating greeting cards, using her pet rabbits as models more often than not. In 1893, still unmarried despite her parent's wishes, she began writing and illustrating her own children's books. It took until 1902 before the first - Peter Rabbit - was published, though. Eventually her writings earned her enough money to buy a farm in the Lake District, where she continued to draw and write until her eyesight failed her. Speaking to peterrabbit.com, the designer said: ‘ I tried to make sure that Beatrix’s characters are instantly recognisable on the coins, with every whisker, spine or feather captured in fine detail. I also tried to achieve a delicate balance between each character and the inscription; the famous names clear for all to see. Meaning and Commemoration of the Coin

For behind the wooden wainscots of all the old houses in Gloucester, there are little mouse staircases and secret trap-doors; and the mice run from house to house through those long, narrow passages; they can run all over the town without going into the streets. Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.
