About this deal

The only (uncertain) knowledge i have on Kate Scott an army nurse, is that she was involved with Andrew Potter who supposedly worked with the NDP and followed the trail to Harper’s Ferry but Booth was not there. I believe Potter’s trail was years later however, under Grant’s presidency. Though you also indicate that Izola and Ogarita (born circa 1859 and died on stage tragically (and suddenly?)age 32, were living there since or before May,1865. After she married Abram, mother and I had a new name. Mother became Izola Mills, and I became Martha Lizola Mills. Mother was relieved and believed we were now respectable, but the church and my mother’s neighbors could not forgive her for giving birth to me. John Wilkes Booth referred to his wife as Izola. I prefer using this name and it is the only one I will use in reference to her.

I am afraid there is not enough evidence to suggest these different women having Booth’s chidren. Potter was trying to claim inheritance for Kate Scott’s child; if you can believe any of these stories. Possibly politically motivated or indeed trying to claim inheritance if true? IF SOMEONE CARES ABOUT THE OGARITA PORTION of the SAGA here are some photos to fill it out. These are ALL from the theatre where she last performed, and which she died in the hotel then next door in: Izola Forrester’s book is filled with claims of gifts, letters, and money that flowed from Rose to Izola and her children. Edwin’s letter seems to corroborate the passage of a great deal of funds from Rose to the imposter. In the Forrester papers, there are no surviving letters from Rose. There is, however, a gift that Rose sent to Izola Mills. This gift takes the form of a book of poems, published in 1881, entitled, Donata and other Poems, by Adidnac. An inscription inside the book reads: I am a coworker of the author of the above article, and his computer is deader than Ogarita all the sudden. He asked me to add these later-found facts as a missing reel from another Binghamton paper has turned up at the library. The Cosgrove Report: Being the Private Inquiry of a Pinkerton Detective into the Death of President Lincoln, by Nicholas Cosgrove, 1979Here is how the Binghamton Herald Republican presented the announcement of her April 12th 1892 death in their April 13th 1892 edition: There is an interesting account by Charles B. Huppert titled ‘How Our Best Known Assassin Became A Hoosier’ on the Webb. Inside, it relates a story from an interview with John C. Shaffer supposed Editor of the ‘Terre Haute Star’ with Izola Martha Mills at ‘her home in Indianapolis’ but never published. I do have an increasing interest in two members of the Booth family that are very often left out of discussions regarding the family; Blanche De Bar Booth, and Marion Booth. As you know, both are daughters of Junius Brutus Booth Jr. I only know a few facts about Blanche such as her date of birth & death, and according to what I read she was J. Wilkes Booth’s favorite niece as she was considered to be rather a rebel sharing some if the same views as her uncle John. I read that Blanche was an actress and that she was considered to be one of the most beautiful actress at one point. The remains of Miss Rosalie Ann Booth, daughter of Junius Brutus Booth, and a sister of Edwin Booth, who died in New York on last Tuesday, were quietly interred at noon yesterday in the family lot at Greenmount Cemetery. Only the immediate friends of the family, a few personal friends, and about forty outsiders witnessed the interment. Mr. Edwin Booth had made a special request that the funeral should be as quiet as possible. Izola lived until 1887. The proceeds from Booth’s will were not distributed until 1896. Both she and Booth’s daughter, Ogarita were dead by that time and didn’t inherit any of Booth’s money.

the tombstone on her grave was placed in October or November 1972 by Rita’s grand daughter, Rita Shepard of Ft. Lauderdale FL. The monument was built by the Bares Monument Company. (My search of an old directory shows the Emmerich J. Bares was an attendant at the Binghamton State Hospital in the 1940’s, and opened his monument company by the 1960’s.) At the time of Lincoln’s Second Inauguration (March 4th 1865) it is on record that Booth was actively dating Lucy Hale and she had got him a pass to be there at the White House, in the crowd. Indeed they had been together only since February and had become, or were soon to be engaged. But you seem to favour that it was Kate Scott that was with Booth at this Inauguration Ceremony and with whom she conceived Booth’s child- Sarah). So this needs to be tied down as it throws into question two things, either a) Booth was not at the Inauguration at all or b) if he was, then who was he really with? I favour Lucy because she was able to get him a pass being the daughter of Senator Hale. Whereas Kate Scott was a dutiful army nurse. Another point about Booth according to his loving sister Asia, is that because he was a famous actor he did have a general travel pass to travel freely North and South. These passes were issued under the auspices of General Grant. I am happy that my input gives further insight into the question of whether Ogarita really was the daughter of John W.Booth the actor. Up till now I just had second hand accounts on this particular subject that tended to favour Ogarita’s claim. The Crandall House was located at 127 Court Street, which is around the corner from the Opera House, and it specialized in housing theatrical troupes. (they would have been able to walk down the alley from hotel to opera house).I would have to take this story with a pinch of salt even though I know for certain that John Booth (publically known as John Wilkes Booth) was not killed in Virginia. However Izola’s story is quite possible for the following reasons and circumstances: Loux, Arthur F. (2014). John Wilkes Booth: Day by Day. Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland & Company. pp.41–44. ISBN 9781476617091. Only a handful of known documents exist that prove a relationship existed between Rose and the con-artist Izola Mills. The most open and honest account of their relationship comes from a letter written by Mrs. Elijah Rogers. Mrs. Rogers was a neighbor of the Booths when they lived on their farm near Bel Air and is mentioned in a couple of Asia’s “Tudor Hall” letters. Mrs. Rogers apparently kept in touch with the Booths, to some extent, after they moved from Tudor Hall. In 1886, a Baltimore doctor by the name of William Stump Forwood was working on a biography of Junius Brutus Booth, the elder. He wrote to Mrs. Rogers, asking her about the life of the Booth family in Bel Air. She, in return wrote him six letters of her reminiscences. While her memories must be taken with a grain of salt, in a letter Mrs. Rogers wrote on August 16 th, she mentions quite openly Izola and her children:
