Description

With its 4x zoom the Sigma 150-600 DN covers a broader range than the 3x zoom of the Sony 200-600 or the 3.3x zoom of the Tamron 150-500mm. On the short end the Sigma 150-600 DN has an angle of view of 16 degrees, compared to 12.5 degrees of the Sony 200-600mm. At the long end the Sigma 150-600 DN reaches 20% further than the Tamron 150-500. The Fujinon XF150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR lens has opened up the Fujifilm X-mount to wildlife and sports photographers who don't just want a long lens – they want an easy-to-carry, affordable, and fast-focusing long lens. The performance of the Fujinon XF150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR is all of these things, and great for the price point. If you're a Fujifilm user, you can now get even closer to subjects that are small, speedy, or elusive. See our full Fujifilm XF150-600 F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR review. How we test lenses The PR teams for camera manufacturers love a good acronym or three. The formal name of this lens is the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. Here’s what all that means, decoded:

The Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 is only slightly less of a handful than the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3, even though it has less reach and is less bright at full telephoto. With tripod mounts attached, it's about 220g (7.8 ounces) lighter, and saves just 5.4cm (2.2") in length with a 1.6cm (0.6") narrower barrel.

Intro

This is a very sharp lens, as good as Nikon's 200-500mm. The only limitation to picture sharpness will be your skill as a photographer. Even if you go out of your way to turn off automatic correction or are shooting this on film, even without correction there is no visible distortion except at 60mm. There is no visible distortion from 100-500mm, and even at 600mm it's mostly invisible even uncorrected. Built for professional use, with its robust, dust and splash-resistant construction, this lens will maximise the resolution of any DSLR camera that it’s paired with. We recommend you using a monopod or tripod with the Sigma 150-600mm for increased stability and comfort, optimising your use of this lens.

After further testing, Sigma has concluded both autofocus and optical image stabilization (for applicable lenses) work 'without any issues' on the following lenses when used with Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras via the EF-EOS R mount adapter or Control Ring EF-EOS R mount adapter:Size (diameter x length): 109 x 265mm (4.3 x 10.4in.) plus 66mm for the lens hood (120mm diameter). The Tamron 150-500 is 93 x 209mm + 55mm lens hood, the Sony 200-600 is 112 x 318mm and the Sigma 150-600 HSM Sports is 121 x 290mm (both without lens hood), the Tamron 150-600 is 108 x 260mm + 97mm lens hood. All lenses except for the Sony 200-600 extend when zoomed to their longest focal length: The Sigma 150-600 DN extends 100mm to a total length of 431mm (incl. lens hood). [0] All paint; no engraving except for a couple of dots and ⅜ markings on tripod foot and the serial number.

Sigma’s service can change the mount of the lens between Sony’s E-mount and L-mount (at a cost). This is a unique feature that no other manufacturer offers. [++] Autofocus: All lenses in this comparison offer autofocus with built-in focus drive. Manual-focus override is by simply turning the dedicated focus ring. The focus ring on the Sigma 150-600 DN has the usual variable gearing of an original mirrorless design which allows for very precise manual focus when turned slowly but cannot be switched to linear gearing. Which makes smooth focus pulling for videographers almost impossible. The Sigma 150-600 HSM Sports and the Tamron 150-600 has the usual direct coupling and linear gearing of a lens designed for DSLRs and the Sony 200-600 also offers linear response for MF. [+] Special thanks to John Lawson for his beautiful images! Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Overview Vignetting. With a lens like this you’d expect vignetting at large apertures. It definitely has that. It’s relatively strong wide open, but what’d a bit surprising is that it stays up until pretty small apertures. It gets gradually less obvious as you make the aperture smaller, but it’s still fairly pronounced at f/14 and it’s not until f/20 that I’d say it’s all but gone. The bad news is that, unlike its successor, this lens will require a trip to Tamron's service department to modify the firmware should an upgrade be necessary.
