Hyundai products can sometimes be a little fiddly to assemble, so I was pleased to find that this pole saw only took about five minutes to put together. There’s not much to be done, other than attaching the handle (the Allen key that you’ll need for this is supplied in the box) and slotting the poles together. Then, fill it with petrol/oil using the provided mixing bottle, pour in some chain oil, and you’re good to go!

The gear ratio is a large 12:1, which means that you only have to apply a little force yourself to get significant cutting power. There’s no problem cutting branches as wide as 33mm in diameter. If your cut branches get tangled up in the tree, use the innovative hook just below the cutting head to just pull them down. There’s also an internal pulling strap to make sure that the lopper itself doesn’t become caught up in the branches. The presence of a motor increases its weight, so it’s not the lightest pruner at 3.8 kg, but there is a shoulder included to help make it more manageable. Whilst the strap does help to some extent, using the RPP750S still requires a fair amount of upper body strength.I’m a huge fan of tools with dual functionality. They tend to mark better value for money and they are great if you’ve not got a huge amount of storage. The Greenworks Cordless 2-in-1 Pole Saw and Pole Hedge Trimmer is ideal if you’re after both a hedge trimmer and a saw, but you don’t want to buy two separate tools. If you’re after a quality 2-in-1 tool, the Einhell Power X-Change 18V Cordless Pole Saw is a good choice. This tool doubles up as both a saw and hedge trimmer, and it comes with a continuously adjustable aluminium handle that extends from 88 cm to 182 cm.

Each has its own set of pros and cons, which we’ll discuss in a moment. However, there are a few key differences between each type that will heavily influence your purchasing decision. Tending to your plants is essential in maintaining their health and it gives you the opportunity of enjoying a lush garden. Pruning removes dead or damaged stems from plants before the next blooming season approaches. This permits the trees to develop healthily and look their best. Instead of relying on a ladder to get to those high up branches which can be a little dangerous, a telescopic tree pruner is an excellent way to safety prune branches you otherwise cannot reach from ground level. Telescopic tree pruners can be manual which is what we mainly focus on in this review or electric of which we featured one model, most electric of petrol models are more hedge trimmers than tree pruners. You can choose to have a battery-operated model or a corded model. Regardless of manual or electric, the main objective is to deliver appropriate clean cuts when needed. There are various kinds of pruners that you can get in the market and all of them are suited for different purposes. With all of this in mind, along with our own extensive testing, we chose the Bosch Cordless Pruner UniversalChainPole 18 as our top choice. It meets the mark on so many levels, from how lightweight and simple it is to use to how well it performs on all types of trees, that it’s easy to see why it has such wide appeal. The rope is external, and I believe it will likely fray after prolonged use. I found that the rope sometimes caught on the branches; I never had this problem with the Gardena Starcut 410 as that had an internal mechanism. The Hayauchi brings those difficult to reach branches within your reach and is the professionals first choice. This telescopic pole saw is easy in use and lightweight, so that you can prune trees all day long without getting tired. Let’s admit it, working with this piece of equipment is not quite the punishment, is it? It can often be tempting to want to go with a big-name company when buying new garden tools. However, sometimes, lesser-known brands produce products that are just as good, if not better, yet without the high price tag. The 32mm 6m Telescopic Tree Pruner FSK1023624 is an ideal telescopic tree pruner for trade professionals as well as DIY enthusiasts. This tool is designed to provide an extended reach for cutting fresh wood with a diameter of up to 32mm. The telescopic shaft length is adjustable from 2.4m to 4m, therefore giving the user a maximum reach of 6m with a 230° adjustable cutting head. The handles are durable soft-grip handles with a non-slip base to ensure optimal comfort and reduced tiring when using the pruners. These pruners adjustability makes them versatile and allows access to tree crowns and dense bushes as well as allowing gardeners to trim overhead without the need of a ladder or at ground level without having to bend or kneel. This is a single pruner, supplied on its own. Product Highlights: They’re chrome-plated and made from carbon steel, resulting in a high-quality tool that can comfortably cut branches up to 6 mm. In some instances, the blades can cut up to 10 mm. The pole is extendable from 130 cm to 200 cm, and is suitable for both mid-range pruning, and cutting higher up. It’s a good quality machine, and comes in three separate pieces to allow the length to be adjusted. The handle attaches to the end of one section, the saw to the end of the other, and then there is an additional extension piece. This pruner can be used without the extension, and will measure approximately 1.8 m, or with the extension, measuring 2.7 m.

One small criticism would be with the number of plastic components on the pruners. Both the extender mechanism, and the cutting head angle adjuster, are plastic, which seems less durable than if all the important parts were made from metal. To start with, petrol chainsaws are usually much heavier than electricity-powered models. They can weigh between 7-10kg, sometimes more, so they’re not the way to go if you were hoping for something lightweight and easy to manoeuvre. If that’s the case, you’ll find that mains and battery pole saws are much more comfortable to handle, with their weights usually ranging between 3-5kg. I was also thrilled with how easy this pole saw was to use. At 4.5kg , some may find it a little heavy, but, for me, its weight was spot on. It gives the head enough weight to balance on the branch you’re cutting, making it much easier to hold the machine steady while it’s in use. This, coupled with the telescopic pole for reaching tall branches, plus the head that pivots 30°, gives you a machine that’s versatile enough to handle just about everything. They come with a 330 mm saw which gives the user extra cutting power on larger branches, although it’s worth noting that this saw is a little weak and not particularly effective. The saw also occasionally gets caught on branches and needs to be removed. There are also pruners on the market which extend further, up to 4m, and are ideal for taller trees.

My Top Recommended Telescopic Tree Pruners

Mains-powered pole saws are often relatively lightweight. In fact, they can even be lighter than battery-powered pole saws because there’s no additional battery weight. Sometimes this can help them be easier to manage – they’re lighter than petrol pole saws and better balanced than battery-powered ones (battery-powered pole saws often have the motor and battery positioned at the saw-end of the tool). Pros of a mains-powered pole saw: Park Pole Set– these pruning poles include four 1.5m threaded alloy poles, a Bahco saw blade hook and a lopper head. The set weighs 6.8kg. Replacement parts are available. I liked the fact that the pullies and mechanisms were all internal. I’ve used loppers before where the rope has got tangled or frayed and the mechanism dusty and dirty; this won’t happen with this tool.

As with any Silky saw, the teeth stay sharp for a long time. If deemed necessary, the teeth of the Hayauchi can be sharpened with a Silky file. Telescopic tree pruners also come with some nifty features that make-work so much easier. These features are not common in all models but it is normal to run into them in other models.

If you also want to use the pruner for some close-range jobs, make sure that its non-extended length is manageable. Extendable pruners tend to be over 1 m long even on their shortest setting, so there may still be jobs that will still require a pair of smaller hand pruners.
