About this deal

Dog recall is a final safety net. A way to get your dog instantly out of dangerous situations, from cliff edges to road sides and even out of the clutches of potential dognappers! Ideally, training a reliable recall should begin from a very young age, as soon as you bring your puppy home. Decide what the recall command will be called; either ‘come’ or the dog’s name is commonly used. Perhaps the most important reason is safety. Training will also make your dog a welcome guest wherever you go. Choosing the right training method

Calling your dog across the kitchen may be a breeze. Calling him in from the yard when he’s enjoying watching the birds in your hedge, or barking at passers-by is a little more challenging. And calling your dog at the park when he’s wrestling with his favorite playmate, may be a step too far. These three factors are what separate people whose dogs have a great recall, from people whose dogs won’t come when they are called. Let’s take a closer look. Dog Recall Training with Distractions

Need more help?

Life is full of distractions but you can teach your dog to ignore them by introducing carefully in a structured way. This is a part of any effective dog training course and it’s known as proofing. Using rewards effectively So why is a reliable recall so difficult to train? Why won’t dogs just come when called? The key to understanding this is to look at the situation from the dog’s point of view. The most common situation where we expect our dogs to obey a recall is when the dog is off-lead during a walk or at the off-lead park. If you call your dog and your dog ignores you, don’t continue to call it over and over, and don’t give chase. Wait for your dog to be less distracted and try again.

I have waited until now to write the review, as although it showed good initial success, I wasn't sure it would really work when recalling from a random playing dog (her big distraction)... but I am pleased to say - it did!!! It is designed to help enable new puppy owners to raise a happy and healthy puppy without turning their lives upside down in the process! He's excellent at recall in our training class ( out in the park) and is doing well in agility ( not competing yet but maybe next year). If your dog obeys a recall under high distraction, such as when there are lots of other dogs and people around, ensure you give an extra special reward. This lets your dog know that it did a really good job.

#2 Basic Obedience Commands

If you stop rewarding the behaviour altogether, your dog may find other things (such as continuing to play with other dogs) more rewarding than obeying the recall. This could result in the command begin ignored. We recently got a new puppy. While, I have trained several of my own dogs over the last 25 years I needed a refresher course. I got this book because of its total focus on recall or "come". Recalling your dog could be considered the most important command your dog needs to know, and many dogs simply don't do it reliably. Especially if they are happy sniffing at something or distracted in any way.

If you prefer, you can use the pinkmenu above to skip straight to the section of your choice Why is trainingyour dog important? This is a unique and detailed book that follows the entire training process through the pursuit of a single skill. A reliable recall, meaning your dog will come to you every time, has many benefits. It can be used in off-lead parks to avoid confrontations between dogs and can even be a life-saver in dangerous situations such as when your dog encounters traffic or snakes. Of course, there is no better way to get a great recall than to get off to a great start with your puppy. Puppy Recall Training Tips

We've also tried the whistle, he's fantastic at responding to this at home but when he goes feral he takes no notice of it. Total Recall is a Force Free training programme and is suitable for puppies and adult dogs of all ages. More information The book's strength lies in clear, engaging writing and, in particular, in its structured exercises designed to build a recall from scratch. It is excellent and filled with helpful exercises -- from the 'precall' training and creating the 'WOW' factor to getting a basic recall to how you bed in the behaviour. Part one gives the detail about why the training works. Part two gives the detail of the program -- the first chapter is for puppies and the second (and more important chapter to my mind) is the pre-call training for older dogs. My Springer was brilliant at recall until he wasn't. Part three deal specifically with problematic dogs who are out of control, have become artful dodgers with the lead or simply who have started to abscond. It also clearly explains how you use a long line in these circumstances. Total Recall is much more than a recall training book. It is a detailed reference and guide to canine behaviour and dog training that will fascinate dog owners in the UK and abroad. Where to buy
