Next, while bass is hugely potent from the Q930B’s subwoofer, its rumbles don’t latch onto the bottom end of the main soundbar quite as effectively as those of the Q990B’s sub, leaving it very occasionally drawing a little too much attention to itself when the going suddenly gets really, really deep.

Vocals in a movie mix sound both clean and well contextualised, and the soundbar seems to gently lift them vertically so that they sound like they’re coming from the onscreen action.

While dropping down to one HDMI input is a pity, there are plenty of soundbar rivals that don’t offer HDMI loopthrough at all, leaving you having to depend on the sometimes laggy ARC system for your main audio input. The subwoofer isn’t quite as refined and nimble as the Q990B’s Acoustic Lens design either. It also has to do more heavy lifting to compensate for the reduced low-frequency support from the soundbar, which can leave peak trebles just occasionally sounding a little exposed.

This model sits above the HW-Q800B series we told you about and below the HW-Q990B. The problem with the latter is that there is little availability and its price varies quite a bit with respect to this HW-Q930B which is in a much more interesting price range. It has many options for you to customize the audio to your liking. You can choose between Standard Mode, Adaptive Mode, Surround Mode and Pro Gaming Mode. At the same time, you can control the bass and treble frequencies independently from the remote control to give more presence to the bass or high frequencies. A Dialogue Enhancer is also available to emphasize vocals above other frequencies, making it easier to hear dialogue in movies or series. The four side speakers help to achieve a much more expanded sound around the room and the center channel together with the dialogue enhancer makes the voices sound very clear in scenes with a lot of effects and music at the same time. Adaptive Sound assesses what you're watching and optimises each scene with AI sound. So feel like you’re in the stadium when watching live sport, be immersed in thrilling action sequences, or hear gentle dialogue with crystal clarity. One last point issue with the Q930B’s movie performance was that I found myself a little more tired at the end of a relentlessly loud movie such as Dune than I did with the more full-blooded Q990B.

Running the Q930B against its bigger Q990B brother inevitably reveals a few limitations in the cheaper model. It isn’t as brutally powerful, for one thing, meaning it can’t go as loud without sounding strained, and doesn’t deliver hard impact sounds with as much force and pressure.
