About this deal

From Dow's flagship vineyard, it is a sweeter wine than many of its kind, showing a caramel note and soft tannins. The fruit from Bomfim and Senhora da Ribeira form the backbone of their impressive vintage ports and, outside of vintage years, they are also the source of very good value Single Quinta vintage Ports. The old vines add further to the intensity of the wine as they make up a very large percentage of the vineyard. Three granite ‘lagares’ for foot treading are complemented by three ‘robotic’ lagares, designed by the Symington family and installed in the quinta’s winery in 2001. The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port.

The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long. Quinta do Bomfim is situated in the heart of the Douro winegrowing region, just east of Pinhão on the north bank of the river Douro. Dow’s Tawny combines subtle fruit with delicious velvety nutty flavours derived from the cask ageing. The wines of the bountiful 1985 vintage have a great balance of power with sweetness and are drinking now.The company produces its wines from the Bomfim, Senhora da Ribeira, Cerdiera and Santinho vineyards. This prolonged time in barrel ensures that the wines take on soft almond and walnut aromas, losing the intense red colour of its youth but gaining immense delicacy, richness and profound intensity of flavour. Critic tasting note: (2019 vintage) "From the Bomfim vineyard in Pinhão, this vintage Port shows black jam and spice flavors. The terroir is so diverse, from mountain to maritime vineyards, hot and dry to cool and green; producing Port, light whites to full bodied reds and delicious rosés.

An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). Wine Spectator Awards Perfect Score to World-Renowned Port Producer Dow's 2007 Vintage Port, from the Oporto, Portugal based producer, has been awarded a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator magazine in the May 31 issue. This vintage Port is made from a blend of traditional Port grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. After a series of tastings supported by scientific analysis to identify the key flavour components of both Port and Dark Chocolate the blend was refined accentuating the floral aromas and the tannic structure of the wine.

When the Port’s are young, the aroma is of violets which matures into cinnamon and develop an elegance with maturity. Light tawny color with spicy aromas and a hint of balsam, but the palate delivers very sweet, smoky plum, herbs and mint characteristics. Some of the most commonly used wine-making grape varieties like Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional.Luxurious and silky on the palate, Dow’s 30 Year Old Tawny is extremely refined with flavours of quince and citrus and a stylish, lingering dry finish with nuances of tea leaf. The story of this House is unusual – rather than a British merchant journeying to Oporto, it was Bruno da Silva who travelled from Oporto to London. Vintage Ports such as the remarkable Dow 1896, the 1927, 1945, 1955, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1980 and the Dow 1994 are all legends in the history of this great wine. Dow's is particularly renowned for their vintage ports, which are made from the finest grapes and aged in oak barrels for several years. The principal grape varieties planted are: Touriga Franca (30%); Touriga Nacional (20%); Tinta Barroca (13%); Tinta Roriz (13%) and old mixed vines (12%), whilst other grape varieties account for the remaining 12%.

Symington's are the sole remaining independent Port producer in the hands of just one family and in addition to Dow's they also count Graham's, Cockburn's and Warre's among their estates. The Dow’s blenders will select particular wines that are set aside and destined to become these great Old Tawny Ports. This wine is made from grapes grown in the Quinta do Bomfim vineyard, which is located in the heart of the Douro Valley, one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Bomfim is a classic ‘River Quinta’ with several natural advantages: it is south-facing ensuring ideal exposure to the sun; its stony schist soil affords excellent drainage, allowing water to reach the vine’s deep roots; the annual average rainfall is near perfect at 800mm; the altitude ranges from 120 to 340 metres above sea level. In the good year’s when Dow’s does not ‘declare’ a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port.
