Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton and inspired by real Black British historical figures. There are twists and turns throughout and I really felt that I was there witnessing this crime unfold. Bringing Georgian London vividly to life, this is a wonderful historical mystery with two delightful heroines. Despite slavery being abolished, unfortunately black people were still being captured and sent overseas as slaves and I found this part of the story eye-opening but interesting to learn about as it is not an aspect in our history that I am familiar with. On the other hand, if Belle was the narrator, it wouldn’t have shown all of the family events that Lizzie goes through. It’s a fantastic portrayal of life in England in the past, the fight against slavery and the Parliamentary processes to try and stop it. A phan mae tad Lizzie, sy’n actor, bron yn cael ei ladd gan siandelïer sy’n cwympo, mae’r ddwy yn gwybod nad damwain oedd hyn. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with relatable and likable characters. The beginning was a little confusing with a large number of characters being introduced and then having little role going forward. It also includes fantastic character, Ignatius, Sancho and his children (of which Lizzie is one) and wife and the entire premise of a society that doesn’t trust black people , yet is putting on a play of Othello, starring a black man which is controversial, some people are concerned that the only portrayal of black people on stage is of a murderer.

Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton and inspired by real Black British historical. The second book in the thrilling middle grade mystery series, perfect for fans of Robin Steven’s Murder Most. Lizzie was part of a proud African family, whereas Belle lived with her aunt Betty (Lady Mansfield) and Uncle William (Lord Mansfield). It really lures you in with it’s intriguing narrative courtesy of Lizzie, and perfectly sets the scene for the mystery while. Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton, Bridgerton fashion and inspired by real Black British historical figures.

At one point in the story, Lizzie and Belle have a fall out: however, they put their own feelings aside and get along better than before. Now it is time for Lizzie and Belle to put their sleuthing skills to the ultimate test, following a trail of thefts, kidnappings and even poisonings that haunts the twisting London streets. The story provides a backdrop for children to understand the history of transatlantic slavery and its subsequent legacies, with a focus on Black resistance and positive representation. The support and passion within the Black community (and Lizzie’s own family) is brilliantly depicted, shot through as it is with sadness about their brothers and sisters who are still in slavery.

The book takes a dramatic start as Elizabeth Sancho’s father, Ignatius Sancho takes the stage to perform The William Shakespeare play of Othello; he was to be the first black man to play the black character of Othello. But that still left me wondering what else was there for a pre teen or teen after we aged out of American girls . The setting is London in the late 1700s and mixes a stage production of Shakespeare’s Othello with the fight to abolish the African slave trade. Williams has taken two real young people who lived in Georgian London and woven an exciting tale of mystery and danger around them.

They team up, making notes and following suspects – until they’re plunged into terrible danger themselves. The first book in a new thrilling mystery series for 9-12s set in 18th Century London and inspired by real Black British historical figures. This is told at pace and the reader is totally caught up in the story, told sometimes in letters, with occasional notes as to where the two are in their deductions. Thrillingly redolent of eighteenth-century London, the first book in a gripping new mystery series inspired by real Black British figures revolves around sinister onstage goings-on at the Drury Lane theatre. But when they catch each other’s eyes at the theatre one night, each is delighted to see another Black girl her own age.Can Lizzie and Belle get to the bottom of what is going on in the theatrical setting of the era, and protect Lizzie’s father; or in fact can they even protect themselves. None of the events in the book were expected through my eyes – I was sure they had discovered who did the crime when yet another suspect was introduced! The mystery kept me coming back to the book because you could never be sure of which characters you could trust. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Drama and Danger is a children’s story suitable for 8 -12 years of age and above.
