He comes and goes without accounting for his actions, and Mike and Tia fear that he is slipping away from them. This absurdity provides an invitation for the inclusion of a wily female investigator, Loren Muse, following these irrational crimes and her valiant struggles to obtain and maintain respect in her nepotist precinct which refuses to take her seriously based solely on her gender. At varying times throughout the 416 page novel the plot gets put on hold while he delves for a page or two into the life and times of Character X, Y, or Z. Now, this decade was way before my time, but if you press me, I'll admit the era fascinates me so much that I've not only seen a lot of movies set in the time of WWII, I've also watched a lot that were made in those years. Bram has taken an interesting premise—gay men in the Navy during the great war—and turned it into a tightly written, well-plotted story.

When I learned about this book i was very interested in reading it for myself but I also felt an instant responsibility, even before I'd read it, to share it with my book club friends. When this big, lanky blond with a country boy’s drawl—and a country boy’s hard muscular body—couldn’t fight his way clear of the Shore Patrol who raided the place, he figured he was on his way to the brig or a dishonorable discharge. Ridiculous plot (the "crazed" killer was laughable), and very cardboard characters - the parents trying to decide in a very stagey way whether or not to install spy software on their son's computer and then discovering a strange exchange of instant messages, the bitch lawyer who has never had kids, blah blah blah.

Ron and Betsy Hill, who's son Spencer (who was also Adam's friend I'd mentioned above) had committed suicide by drug overdose for unknown reasons.Edgar Hoover chapters 12 to 15 give more detailed background insight into the thinking of the FBI following Pearl Harbour and spies. Interestingly Hank comes to the realization that he was in love with Juke also but only after Juke is murdered. Not only was the content troublesome (I realized he was being less than gentlemanly with multiple ladies) but I also had the concern that he wasn't getting a good night's sleep. It is a good spy thriller with a great chase scene through a war bond rally in Times Square on the Fouth of July. This isn't something that could happen to only a select, specific group of people, but rather it could happen to the family down the street.

Of course I love this author's Myron Bolitar books the best (I am a seriesaholic) but I enjoy his stand alones like this one as well. The young boy doesn't have much hope unless they can locate his actual father or a paternal relative. He hates Communists, he hates Roosevelt, he hopes that the US wakes up and switches its allegiance to Britain and wakes up the promise Hitler has for America.
