Within census records, you can often find information like name of household members, ages, birthplaces, residences, and occupations. We sat in the garden after breakfast with our coffee and was joined by the hosts who were very friendly and we even spent a bit of time with Darcey the Retriever who is lovely. She has once again managed to bring out the feelings of isolation of the main character but does so in a way where the character does not come across as weak.

Juniper wins a scholarship to the prestigious Ellsmere Academy boarding school but soon finds herself at odds with the rich toff girls who see poor people as entertainment. After reading this first ‘year’ I’m sure all readers are going to want to see what future years bring for Juniper. Panels are broken out to capitalize on specific moments, creating a variety of impactful emotional beats: sardonic retorts, profound loneliness, smug satisfaction, and doe-eyed vulnerability. First off, One Year at Ellsmere, the new and improved version of an older graphic novel that was published years ago under the title The War at Ellsmere, is out now from First Second Books!Through her steady hand, we come to like and appreciate these characters and it’s in their quiet, reflective moments that Hicks allows them to at least begin to transcend their form. One Year at Ellsmere has updated artwork (I re-inked the entire book) and is now in colour, thanks to the work of amazing colourist Shelli Paroline! All that said about the characters, the one critique I’d make is that Emily, the head mean girl, comes off as a bit too one dimensional.
