And there are hooks of every sort on Adrenalize, from broad strokes like the gloriously harmonized chorus of “Heaven Is” to ear-catching details like the little yodel Elliott slips into “Personal Property.

Def Leppard remain one of only five rock groups who can claim two separate original 10 million plus selling albums in the US, the others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen. Keen to reassure fans they were back for good, Def Leppard recruited versatile former Dio/ Whitesnake guitarist Vivian Campbell to partner Phil Collen, and set out on an 18-month world tour, kicking off in the wake of the band’s much-acclaimed appearance at the star-studded Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at London’s Wembley Stadium, in April ’92. Thus, the heart of the song is its melodic development, the way Joe Elliott’s vocal builds from the breathy, low-key opening verse to the soaring, full-throated harmonies of the chorus. Miles had his eyelids sellotaped open and his head stuck to a serving hatch while the picture was taken.

Adrenalize, Def Leppards fifth studio album from 1992, followed the enormous Hysteria (released in 1987) and cemented the band as the dominant arena rock band.Def Leppard’s landmark fourth album, Hysteria, was a case study in turning tragedy into triumph, but circumstances forced the band to respond to adversity for a second time when they came to record its much-anticipated follow-up, Adrenalize. Seven singles/videos were released in various forms around the world including the biggest hit 'Let's Get Rocked'. Fans would have been forgiven for worrying whether Def Leppard could survive Steve Clark’s loss, yet when Adrenalize was released, on March 31, 1992, they could breathe a collective sigh of relief. Adrenalize is so relentlessly catchy that it almost seems as if the band is about to abandon its heavy-metal roots for the greener fields of hard pop.

The album was recorded following the tragic death of guitarist Steve Clark--with Phil Collen recording all guitar parts--and dedicated to his memory. Rolling Stone astutely described Adrenalize as “a seemingly unending string of energetic, hook-heavy songs about girls”, and after “Let’s Get Rocked” powered up to No. The two guitarists’ dextrous, inter-linking lead and rhythm parts were a crucial element of the hit albums Pyromania and Hysteria, and their trademark dueling fretboards were woven into the very fabric of Def Leppard’s sound. Released at the height of grunge, ‘Adrenalize,’ Def Leppard’s much-anticipated follow-up to ‘Hysteria,’ saw the group reclaim the rock mantle. The band tried to continue the recording process, going back into the studio the day after Clark's death to cope with the loss, but it took several months before they were able to work to what they felt was a satisfactory standard. The band included a re-recording of Hysteria B-Side 'Tear It Down' due to it's popularity after the 1989 MTV Awards. He co-wrote six of the songs and his guitar parts were played by Phil Collen as well as his own making this the only album the band recorded as a four piece. In fairness, the band’s tardiness isn’t entirely the product of foot dragging, as the death of guitarist Steve Clark undoubtedly slowed this album (and doubled fellow guitarist Phil Collen’s workload) even more than the loss of drummer Rick Allen’s arm complicated the completion of Hysteria. Since Collen was recruited during the making of 1981’s High’n’Dry, he had developed an almost telepathic understanding with Clark. Tear It Down" is a re-recording of a song written during a recording session following the completion of the Hysteria album, and released as B-side for that album's single " Women" in 1987.
