Piling up erratic behavior through the Alpha Legionaries and certain characters and ramping up the tension of the infiltration, he provided a magnificent red herring for readers to follow. Corax becomes obsessed with the creation of new legionaries and once the Magos Biologis and Raven Guard chief apothecary Vincente Sixx figure out how to use the gene-technology a new breed of Raven Guard legionaries is quickly bred and nicknamed "the Raptors. Sometimes the only thing that sets these books apart is the level of descriptive talent that evokes the mood and brings the horror to an eye-peeling visceral level.

Upon arrival in the Sol system the Raven Guard are stopped by an Imperial Fists force led by Captain Noriz. I like the Raven Guard, I like the entries that focus on the Legions themselves, and I like the entries that have less fighting and more macro-level developments. It's known as the Corvus suit and the beaked helmet is an Imperial in-joke that the Primarch appreciates, even if his men don't. After their near-destruction at the hands of Horus’ Traitor Legions, the Raven Guard seek to escape and rebuild, but the forces of Chaos are insidious, and the Legion may yet face its doom.

The cast of Raven Guard are extremely likeable for the most part with funny, robust dialogue which separates them from the warrior-monks of 40K. After a tense and slow few weeks trying to escape the Isstvan system in Branne's stealthed ship Avenger Corax splits up the survivors, sending two ships back to Deliverance while continuing with one ship to Terra. In the wake of the Dropsite Massacre Corax and the Raven Guard withdraw to lick their wounds and sharpen their claws. And don't get me started on the half assed attempt to give the Raven Guard a meaningful victory at the end in maybe a dozen pages max. As might be expected, the Traitor Legions are present, as are the Imperial Fists, which is something I always like to see and although the story focuses on Corax's struggles to rebuild his legion, a lot of the book is spent in flashbacks, which focus on the backstory of Corax. Two characters thought whose little side stories felt unnecessary or built up to nothing were imperial commander Marcus Valerius and former librarian Balsar Kurthuri.

Things start well enough, but deep down we know they cannot end well and we spend the entire book waiting for the hammer to fall and shatter all hope. They're rescued thanks to the psychic vision of an Imperial Guard commander who, frankly, brings nothing to this story, and whose every scene could have been cut. Most of the characters are fairly interesting, except for maybe the alpha legionaries who are just completely and utterly unlikeable. With Corax finally released, collecting the novellas and finishing the story arc begun with this novel, I figured it would be best to re-read the old novel in preparation for the new anthology. Otherwise, the book is quite frustrating - while there is the classic hubris meeting nemesis, Corax starts with barely a Legion left and ends with barely a Legion left, with no peak in between. The second part is a big game of Unmask The Spy, and also the Doom in which the Raven Guard is thrown.

One might argue that surely most of the Heresy books should suffer from this but somehow for me this is the only one where it has been a problem.
